On the Road to COP28
An initiative by the German Emirati Joint Council for Industry & Commerce (AHK)
The UAE determined to enhance its competitiveness, its sustainability development, and preserve its
environment for future generations. With an ambition to become a global hub and a successful model of
sustainable development, the formation of the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE) in
2016 was aimed at tackling climate change issues in a way that makes economic sense while protecting
the natural heritage.
The UAE is proud host of the 2023 UN Climate Change Conference (UNFCCC COP28).
The conference will act as catalyst within the UAE market for innovation, technology and strategic
partnerships that work towards the common goal of tackling climate change.
Objective and Scope
- promote innovation and scale up the green economy through knowledge transfer.
- decipher current and upcoming plans for the UAE market and identify opportunities and strategies for a sustainable future.
- foster long-term partnerships and build the bridge between governmental institutions and the private sector on green economy topics
With the AHK Sustainability Series, which includes events and activities across diverse industry sectors, we contribute to thematic actions and create momentum towards COP28.
Our Partners on the Road to COP28
BASF
At BASF, we create chemistry for a sustainable future. We combine economic success with environmental protection and social responsibility. Around 111,500 employees contribute to the BASF Group’s success worldwide. Our business is divided into the Chemicals, Materials, Industrial Solutions, Surface Technologies, Nutrition & Care and Agricultural Solutions segments.
BMW
The BMW Group is continuing to design the future and is constantly driving sustainability forwards with its innovations. The circular economy is the key to conserving resources and reducing carbon emissions. For us, circularity in particular means that at the end of their use phase, vehicles are used as a source of raw materials for new cars.
Our vehicles are already made from up to 30 per cent recycled and reused materials on average. We would like to continue increasing this amount. Fundamental research, detailed development and a clear focus on sustainability are employed to investigate each production process and find alternative raw materials. We are concentrating on raw materials that are procured in a responsible way, processed carbon-free or at least low in carbon and highly recyclable. In our search for innovative solutions, we adopt new perspectives and rethink conventional approaches. Our aspiration and our promise: we turn things around.

The plant was ceremonially opened in September 2022 together with our partner, the French company Schneider Electric. This was one reason why the world-leading independent rating agency EcoVadis awarded us the highest sustainability status of platinum last August 2022.
