  • News

Advancing Bilateral Cooperation in the Energy Sector - From 12–15 May, the German Emirati Joint Council for Industry and Commerce (AHK UAE) was hosting a Green Hydrogen Delegation from Germany to the United Arab Emirates. The delegation trip was organised within the framework of the German Energy Solutions Initiative, an export program of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWE), supporting the internationalization of German energy technologies.

The delegation consisted of representatives from German companies active in the hydrogen sector, including MAN Energy Solutions SE, I. CONTEST, FEV, Hexagon Purus, and move technology.

Day 1 – Dubai: Expert Briefing and Industry Exchange

The program commenced with an in-depth briefing for the German participants, conducted by H.E. Sybille Pfaff (Consul General of Germany in Dubai), Heena Nazir from Germany Trade and Invest (GTAI), and Eva Steinhaus from Euler Hermes.

Following the briefing, an expert conference was held at Pullman Dubai Downtown, featuring keynote addresses and technical presentations by leading stakeholders, including Nadim Jalbout (Siemens AG), Jakob Baumgarten (Ontras & TU Dresden), and Dr Stephen Wilkinson (University of Wollongong in Dubai). The event brought together more than 60 representatives from the hydrogen, renewable energy and mobility sectors. The attendees, comprising both AHK member companies and external organizations, engaged in active discussions and networking sessions, further enhanced by a joint luncheon.

In the afternoon, the delegation visited Dubai Expo City, where they were welcomed by Siemens Energy. Daniel Schwappach provided insights into ongoing hydrogen developments in the region, including the company’s collaboration with the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) to install an electrolyser at the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park. The first day concluded with a joint dinner, offering an opportunity for reflection and informal exchange.

Day 2 – Strategic Discussions on Hydrogen Mobility and Infrastructure and Energy

The second day of the delegation began with a visit to the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA). Each of the participating German companies delivered a pitch on hydrogen mobility solutions to representatives from various RTA departments. A constructive dialogue followed on the role of hydrogen in achieving Dubai’s Net Zero 2050 goals.

Subsequently, the delegation was received by H.E. Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, CEO of DEWA, at the authority’s headquarters, accompanied by H.E. Sybille Pfaff. DEWA presented key figures and milestones in its clean energy strategy, followed by an introduction of the German companies and their technological solutions. The delegation then continued to the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park. At the DEWA Innovation and Sustainability Centre, participants were given a comprehensive overview of Dubai’s energy strategy and technological advancements. The site visit offered a remarkable view over the expansive solar installations and the CSP tower – one of the tallest of its kind.

Day 3 – Abu Dhabi: High-Level Policy and Business Dialogue

On the third day, the delegation travelled to Abu Dhabi for a series of high-level discussions focusing on green hydrogen, clean energy, and bilateral cooperation. Meetings were held with Masdar, the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, the Abu Dhabi Department of Economic Development (DED), and the Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO).

These exchanges provided valuable insights into the UAE’s national hydrogen strategy and outlined opportunities for collaboration on pilot projects and large-scale investments. A guided tour through Masdar City offered participants a first-hand impression of sustainable urban planning and innovation.

Furthermore, the delegation held meetings with Linde Gas Middle East, Dornier Group, and Tree Energy Solutions (TES), demonstrating the increasing engagement of German and international private-sector actors in shaping the future of hydrogen technology in the UAE. All discussions underscored the importance of global cooperation, technological exchange, and joint ambition to achieve climate neutrality.

Day 4 – Ras Al Khaimah: Spotlight on Emerging Emirate Initiatives

The final day of the program was dedicated to the Emirate of Ras Al Khaimah (RAK), which is actively working on expanding renewable energy deployment and exploring alternative energy solutions. The delegation was welcomed by representatives of the Ras Al Khaimah Transport Authority (RAKTA) and the Energy Efficiency & Renewables Office (REEM), which has been responsible for implementing the RAK Energy Efficiency and Renewables Strategy 2040 since its establishment in 2017.

The visit provided an overview of the emirate’s ambitious sustainability goals and highlighted RAK’s openness to innovative energy technologies, particularly in the field of mobility and efficiency.

The delegation concluded its visit with a closing reception at one of Dubai’s highest venues, the Privilege Club at SLS Hotel, offering panoramic views over the city and a fitting setting to round off the successful trip to the UAE.

Besides the official group program, the German companies also held individual business-to-business meetings with selected local and international stakeholders to explore tailored cooperation opportunities and expand their regional business networks. These encounters further enhanced the potential for long-term partnerships and concrete project development in the Gulf region.
