Solving today’s complex energy and environmental issues requires international cooperation — and that’s exactly what their Energy Partnership aims to support.
Together, Germany and the UAE are advancing solutions that align with UAE sustainability goals and the broader push for environmental sustainability in the UAE. Their collaboration encourages investment in clean energy initiatives, research, and policy development — all of which contribute to long-term energy security and more resilient global climate action.

Driving Sustainability in the UAE: Partnership Goals
At the heart of this partnership is a shared vision for a cleaner energy future. Germany and the UAE are committed to reducing CO₂ emissions, supporting UAE renewable energy projects, and accelerating the development of sustainable technologies.
Key focus areas include:
Hydrogen Development: A Core Pillar of Cooperation
One of the key focus areas of the Energy Partnership is the expansion of green hydrogen. Germany brings advanced hydrogen technologies, while the UAE offers ideal conditions for large-scale production — including abundant solar resources and space for renewable energy in the UAE.
In 2022, the UAE delivered its first shipment of hydrogen to Germany — a major milestone toward a stable hydrogen supply chain. The shipment included blue ammonia, an efficient hydrogen carrier. Both countries continue to invest in the full hydrogen value chain: production, transport, and industrial use — with a clear focus on green hydrogen made using renewable energy in the UAE.
To support this shift, Germany and the UAE are also working on hydrogen fueling stations, improved storage solutions, and more efficient transport infrastructure. These efforts are key to integrating hydrogen into power generation, industry, and sustainable transport in the UAE.
This kind of cross-border collaboration directly supports UAE clean energy initiatives, enhances energy sustainability in the UAE, and moves both countries closer to their long-term climate and sustainability goals.
Germany and the UAE have both set bold climate targets. The UAE aims for net-zero emissions by 2050, while Germany plans to reach this goal by 2045. Their Energy Partnership plays a critical role in helping both nations implement real, effective strategies for reducing CO₂ emissions and promoting UAE sustainable development.
Key actions include:
Both Germany and the UAE are investing heavily in renewable energy. With over 2,200 kWh/m² of solar radiation annually, the UAE is one of the most promising locations worldwide for solar power. Germany, meanwhile, has led the way in solar and wind technology development for decades.
By combining their strengths, the two countries are accelerating the global energy transition and supporting UAE renewable energy projects that are central to UAE sustainability goals.
Key initiatives include:
Improving energy efficiency is another core priority of the Energy Partnership. Germany and the UAE are jointly working on smart grids, AI-powered energy management systems, and advanced storage solutions to reduce energy loss and make power systems more sustainable.
Examples of innovative projects include:
At COP28 in the UAE, both countries reaffirmed their commitment to clean energy and climate protection. They agreed to expand hydrogen trade, accelerate decarbonization, and strengthen public-private partnerships for green energy projects in the UAE.
Several German and Emirati companies signed cooperation agreements focused on UAE renewable energy projects, highlighting strong momentum behind corporate sustainability in the UAE.
The UAE and Germany continue to make major investments in renewable energy.
Following the first successful hydrogen shipment from the UAE to Germany, both countries are now focused on developing a complete hydrogen value chain — from production facilities and export infrastructure to fueling stations.
This system will help scale up the use of hydrogen across sectors like industry, transport, and energy, supporting the broader vision for environmental sustainability in the UAE.
Germany and the UAE are committed to expanding their Energy Partnership even further. Planned next steps include:
