The maritime economy belongs to the most important economic and employment factors in Hamburg and the entire North German coastal region. Its main sectors are naval architecture, shipbuilding supply, steal and metal construction, electricity, plant manufacturing and navigation technology.

With turnovers of about 24.5 billion euro and over 65.000 employees in approximately 2000 companies the Hamburg Metropolitan Region is the major location of the German maritime economy. The maritime industry with its approximately 26.000 employees (including the maritime service industry) generates about 30% of the total turnover of the maritime economy in the Hamburg Metropolitan Region. In addition, there are about 2434 employees working in 53 education- and research facilities. The biggest industrial branch of the maritime industry is the shipbuilding supply industry.

Many of the maritime industry sectors and scientific institutions are concentrated in Northern Germany and through numerous networks constitute an important economic cluster. The North German Federal States of Bremen, Hamburg, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Lower Saxony and Schleswig-Holstein are all partners of the transnational Maritimes Cluster Norddeutschland.
