Qatar

Business location Qatar

Economically, Qatar enjoys great prosperity. It is the world's largest LNG exporter and has one of the highest GDP per capita. However, with dropping energy prices since mid-2014, non-hydrocarbons growth, which is led by the construction and finance sectors, will be needed to achieve the targeted diversification of the country’s economy. German companies are well known and appreciated in the highly competitive Qatari market and have proven to be reliable partners, both politically and economically. Business opportunities for German companies are to be found especially in the sectors of conventional and renewable energies, engineering, infrastructure, plant engineering, machinery and medical technology.

Country Profile

Since gaining independence in 1971, Qatar has quickly gained regional and international prominence. With a relatively small population and significant revenues generated from its natural recourses, the country is heavily investing in developing its infrastructure. The government’s US$200 billion investment program underlines Qatar’s commitment in line with the Qatar National Vision 2030 objectives. In 2010 Qatar won the contest to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup and has since witnessed considerable media attention. Thanks to the revenue from the oil and gas industry Qatar boasts one of the most stable economies in the world. The country is a 160-km peninsula extending out into the Gulf, sharing its only land border with Saudi-Arabia and sea borders with Bahrain, Iran and the UAE. The state is ruled by the Al-Thani family. In 1995 Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani became emir. Under his rule, a range of social and economic reforms have taken place which helped the country to quickly develop and prosper. In 2013 Sheikh Hamad handed over the throne to his son, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, Qatar’s current emir.
